wow i really started 2024 off on a high note by NOT posting this on time… oh well. I had full intentions on getting this out last week, but the holidays are busyyyyyy. I just got back to new york this morning from a red eye and even though ive been gone just over 2 weeks, I truly feel like I was gone MONTHS. so i’m very happy to be back in new york and get back into a routine of life.
this edition of the substack/newsletter will be following the same outline I do weekly, but will just be an overall reflection of 2023 as a whole ◡̈
more movies. more books. more podcasts. more consumption of things that make me happy.
movies: I watched a lot of movies this year, and each month I would pick my favorite movie i watched that was “new” to me. so it didnt necessarily come out in 2023, but in the year of 2023 I watched it for the first time (only 3 on the list didnt come out this year, the rest of them are new movies from 2023 haha). here is the list!
January- women talking
February- paddington 2
March- the quiet girl
April- a good person
May- are you there god it’s me margaret
June- past lives
July- barbie
August- bottoms
September- pride and prejudice
October- practical magic
November- priscilla
December- boy and the heron and wonka
honorable mentions- the banshees of inisherin, before sunrise, before sunset, a thousand and one, florida project, theater camp, shiva baby, poor things, and saltburn
podcasts: my fav podcasts I listened to this year havent changed much from years past. I am obsessed with the What We Said podcast and have been since day 1 and I’ve loved The Bad Broadcast also from the beginning. BUT this year came the Girlscamp podcast (my gospel) and CHEERS! with Avery Woods, House of Cinema (a movie podcast) and Normal Gossip.
music: as far as music goes I wanted to share some of my fav albums of the year- GUTS by Olivia Rodrigo, the record by boygenius, snow angel by renee rapp, good riddance by gracie abrams, and stick season (we’ll be alright) by noah kahan
in my mind: some of my fav books I read this year- happy place by emily henry (truly my fav of her books so far), lessons in chemistry by bonnie garmus, beautiful boy by david sheff, the seven husbands of evelyn hugo by taylor jenkins reid, ballad of songbirds and snakes by suzanne collins
honorable mention- ejaculate responsibly by gabrielle stanley blair
2023 was a good ol’ growing year for me. so much happened this year and I feel like i’ve become a new person. I started my first relationship ever and fell in love. I’m half-way through law school and i dont really like it as much as i was hoping i would. but i enjoy the jobs that come from law school, so at this point is a necessary mean to an end. I lived in LA for three months, also didn’t love that, but thats okay. I saw timothee chalamet in real life, a BIG highlight for me tbh. i’m trying to figure out my religious beliefs and I feel like this year has been a big step in that journey. I went to the Eras Tour and got to experience the year of the girl through Taylor Swift and the Barbie movie, and everyone reclaiming their femininity and i love it. I think i’ve seen just about every single extended family member of mine this year in person, which is cool and was needed. and yeah its been a good year. i’m looking forward to 2024 and what is to come!
these arent going to be from 2023 as a whole, but lets just say that tiktok, pinterest, and instagram are some of my favorite apps of the year and a good source of content and happiness for me haha
instagram: JACI IS HAVING A BABY AND I COULD (AND DID) SOB, taylor swift’s dress at the golden globes is truly so stunning, he is my king of 2023
to end I just want to share some goals/resolutions I have for the year.
one of them is to be more creative and share my creativity more, which this platform is allowing me the space to do that, so thank you for being part of it. I would love to have 100 subscribers to the newsletter by the end of the year, i’m in the 20’s now, so we are moving along.
I want to go to bed before midnight most nights of the week and get into a better sleep pattern. and with that I want to read 24 books and get into a better habit of journaling. now that i’m not actively going to church each sunday, I want to consciencely make the effort to journal more frequently.
I want to move my body more and be more intentional with being active. and with that comes eating at least one fruit or veggie every day. I KNOW this sounds pathetic, but I do go some days without consuming any fruits or veggies so I am working on that this year.
just some small goals to share with you guys! I have plenty more but these feel the most important to me! would love to hear some of your goals for the year or highlights from 2023 ◡̈
xoxo,
your big sis, kaitlynn
