#19: taylor swift is going to the super bowl
I can't even begin to explain to you how many people at school have commented to me about this because they know I love Taylor
welcome to the weekly RECAP, so happy to have you all here !
painting your nails weekly. I have been taking the time every sunday this year so far, to paint my nails a different color and go through the thirty minute ritual of starting fresh with my nails. I have a BAD BAD BAD habit of biting my nails when they get too long, i like to keep them short, and I wanted to stop that habit, but even with getting my nails done at a salon I would still bite them. however, somehow with knowing that I will be doing my nails on sunday I have some more patience and I resist the need to bite them because I know I will be filing them down and cutting them in just a couple of days. I use the fast drying sally hansen polish and a top coat. its not fancy and its not gel, but they keep for a week without really chipping and I get to do a new color each week. its fun and a little self-love ritual.
movies: for bjørn’s christmas present I got tickets for us to see vertigo with the new york philharmonic where they perform the score live to the movie. it was really cool and I really enjoyed the film. we also watched the nice guys with ryan gosling and russel crowe and it was truly so funny. highly recommend.
oscar nominations came out this week, and wowie did it cause a lot of commotion… I want to chat more about that in a bit but before the nominations were released I had already watched 7 out of the 10 best picture movies that were nominated and had plans to watch the other three. bjørn and I did a double feature and watched killers of the flower moon and zone of interest in the same day haha. it was a long day, so now I just have anatomy of a fall to watch to complete the 10 best picture nominations. and i’ll probably get around to watching other films that made nominations in other categories before the oscars come around.
to lighten the mood we also watched the wizard of oz this weekend, which came out 85 years ago!! I haven’t seen that movie in forever and wow, it was stunning to watch again. and then for movie church we watched how to lose a guy in 10 days. that movie honestly has aged so well. it came out in 2003 !!!
podcasts: loveeee kylie katich and loved her interview with madi murphy. in this episode of the bad broadcast they mention the show the bear and omg everyone needs to watch it, it is truly so beautiful and I love it. but be warned that it is STRESSFUL
also loved this episode about creating a strong healthy body
music: if i’m being 100% honest the only music i’ve listened to really this week has been the wonka soundtrack… I wish I could say that I was doing it ironically but it’s not haha
in my mind: currently reading 4 books… I am attempting to listen to the audio book of Dune, i started back last summer and gave up and now i’m back at it and i have no idea what is going on… I’m reading Rum Punch for a book club, and honestly im intrigued. I’m reading a book called Gang Leader for a Day for one of my classes. and then i’m also reading, but this book is on the back burner for sure, called A Storied Life of AJ Fikry
in my stomach: I made some homemade vegetable stock from veggie scraps that i’ve been keeping in my freezer for a few months now, and it made SO MUCH stock. I used a lot of it by making a ton of rice and freezing some rice and then made fried rice and apparently there is a really bad food poisioning that you can get from leftover rice, so thats cool, and the perfect timing to learn about after I made all this rice… but I guess that is a risk i’ll take like I do every time I eat raw cookie dough
while the oscars are truly not important in the grand scheme of things in this world and all the issues that are going on, they are important to pop culture, and as I have discussed i’m trying to rebrand pop culture into being more important and less stigmatized when being discussed. on that note, I would like to add my two cents into the pot of oscar commentary.
a lot of people have expressed frustration and annoyance with margot robbie not getting a nomination for best actress and greta gerwig not getting a nomination for best director when ryan gosling got a nomination for best supporting actor. I think a lot of people are surprised because Barbie was the highest grossing film last year and was a world wide phenomenon. I think those are very valid reasons to be surprised and upset, but im putting this right here, we shouldnt say that these women not getting nominations were snubs. a snub means that they were ignored.
Barbie was not ignored, it got 8 nominations including best picture when most comedy movies don’t. by saying they were snubbed also indicates that those that did get a nomination were not deserving of their nomination. while, I thought margot robbie was wonderful and truly was a great actress to play Barbie it was more her role as producer that made Barbie the movie that it was rather than her acting. I think a few other actresses could have done just as good of a job as she did if they were working with the same script. but I think her role as producer was crucial for the movie as a whole. that being said, I am sad about greta’s lack of a nomination for best director, but I think that the other nominations were just as deserving.
I personally think that celine song, the director of past lives, also was well deserving of a nomination for best director. I can also say that I think that greta lee, the main actress in past lives, deserved a nomination for best actress. or even more so, teyana taylor, for her role in a thousand and one, which I think was a highly overlooked movie completely for the oscars in general.
tldr: this tiktok summing up why we can be frustrated but there are other people we should be frustrated for as well
tiktok: I pray that she runs for president; a beautiful song for the past year; this snl skit cracked me up; gorgeous apartment- a true inspiration and the kindest sister
instagram: these patches are gorgeous; i’m mesmerized by these cakes; a darling pooh bear tattoo; you already know
well I need to do readings for school so I need to end this here but I love you all and thanks for catching up on the RECAP!
xoxo,
your big sis, kaitlynn
