#34: if you have a blue checkmark and haven’t posted about palestine, i’ve unfollowed you
(even timothee chalamet...)
hi hi hi sisters ♡ if that title didn’t draw you in, I don’t know what will this week haha
I’m officially done with 2L (2nd year of law school) and to be completely honest, it hasnt really hit me yet, maybe it will once i get my grades for the semester and then I can totally move forward, but until then, i’m like Lot’s wife looking back at the past semester
omg I can’t believe I didn’t write about this last week, but just over a week ago I finished Funny Story by Emily Henry and I LOVED it! which I wasn’t surprised I did because I have either liked her books (Beach Reach), enjoyed her books (People We Meet On Vacation), really really liked her books (Book Lovers) or LOVED her books (Happy Place is #1, but Funny Story is a close 2nd)! I truly just gobble up her books and read them so quickly. she is funny and quippy and does such a good job pulling you into the story. and they are just a nice silly read!
movies: started this week off watching the amazing spiderman (the andrew garfield//emily stone one- YES she wants to be called by her first name !!!) I never watched it when it came out, which is very unlike me as I watched lots of superhero movies during that time, and I hadn’t seen it since. so it was my first watch and I really enjoyed it! omg bjørn and I saw the fall guy and I loved it!! truly so funny, the perfect balance of comedy, action, and a little bit of romance. I highly recommend it to everyone ◡̈ one night bjørn and I also watched emperor’s new groove, I havent seen it in years and it is just so silly and funny. and then for movie church we watched national treasure, remains in my top 10 favorite movies.
podcasts: I truly might just beg everyone to listen to this episode of what a day. it gave a wonderful summary of the history of the united states and our (using that term generously) thoughts and feelings towards israel. very eye opening and I wish it had come out earlier!!
music: Hinds Hall by Macklemore. this is going to be my #1 song of the year. i am trying to stream it as much as possible because every cent earned from the song will be donated to the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees. and also its an incredibly beautiful and powerful song. I really appreciate Macklemore for taking the effort to become educated, write a song that shows what he’s learned, and make it catchy enough that you want to listen to it over and over again.
in my mind: currently reading Are You There God It’s Me Margaret, and i’m so excited because I love that movie
buckle up, i’m going to be real blunt with all of you (not necessarily you guys in particular, but a lot of people in general). if you cared about women’s rights and black lives matter you should care about what is happening in palestine right now.
“If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor. If an elephant has its foot on the tail of a mouse, and you say that you are neutral, the mouse will not appreciate your neutrality.”
-Desmond Tutu
we are in a really cool and powerful position as consumers to control the revenue of celebrities and influencers as well as big corporations. if you don’t feel like you can block a celebrity for whatever reason, then unfollow them. i went through everyone i follow on instagram and i tried to unfollow as many verified accounts (the ones with a blue checkmark) as i could if i dont remember them posting anything about the genocide, or even a ceasefire. and it was eye opening and disappointing to realize how many people i was unfollowing- timothee chalamet included. and i realized that if i followed the same bar for just friends or people who arent verified, i would have unfollowed probably 75% of the people i follow… I then went and blocked the biggest people I could think of (Taylor Swift and Taylor Nation, Beyonce, Kim Kardashian, Harry Styles, and a few others) because they have not spoken out about the injustices occurring.
it is my personal opinion that if you decide to have a platform (big or small) you have a moral obligation to use that platform for good however you see fit. we are here to help each other and people with large platforms know their platform can be used to help others and they aren’t using it. and I am not saying that celebrities and influencers should be world politicians, but I am saying that everything is political, whether or not we want it to be. every decision we make, the places we live, the stores we shop from, the media we consume, is all controlled by politics. and some may argue and say that “well they aren’t educated enough to speak on such world issues” then get the fuck educated. and if we wait for the right time to say the perfect statement, we will never speak up, and that is how neutrality wins.
“We must take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented.”
-Elie Wiesel
i’m pissed it’s taken people so long to say ANYTHING but i’m glad they are finally saying something. i really appreciated what reece on tiktok said about just that. I understand that people can lose their jobs if they are very open about palestine online, which is complete and utter bullshit that companies can do such things. but hell those columbia students and students across the country got expelled. but for most of us, our jobs aren’t on the line and even if they were, part of me wants to say “who the fuck cares” because LIVES are on the line. but I know that we live in a very capitalist country and people are already living paycheck to paycheck and truly cannot afford to not post about politics online. to you I don’t blame. but i hope that if that is your circumstance, you are still calling and emailing your representatives and asking and urging for a ceasefire. or if you’ve done that, try to spare some change and donate to families who are trying to evacuate from gaza, or if you can’t do that then please watch countless tiktok videos of influencers who are raising money through operation olive branch. most people are donating all the money they earn (and some are matching it) and giving it to families to help them evacuate.
i’ve lost followers on instagram (like 40+) in the past 90 days and I know its probably because of what i’m posting. but i’m not trying to be an influencer, so it doesn’t matter to me. I hope I can keep using the little resources I have been given to me to try to make a change. and I hope that you guys will too. i’m not saying that we shouldn’t enjoy life and pregnancy announcements and learning about beef between kendrick and drake but i am saying, and i think i will continue to until i die, you also need to care about world issues. it isn’t cool to be ignorant or to not care. quite frankly, it’s embarrassing.
tiktok: i’m embarrassed to admit how many times I watched this video, but the girl in simon’s position is making me feel things. these women made me tear up, reminds me of the mother’s in mary poppins fighting for the women’s vote.
pinterest: the perfect summer nails; I need this set of bathroom towels; I want to do this to all my pants
instagram: I want to send cute mail like this; I can’t get over her, and I don’t think I ever will; I liked reading about these forms of intimacy
woof that was so so so much. I get so fired up and I can’t stop. so thank you for taking the time to get to the end. even if you don’t read it all, I still appreciate you being here.
love 🤍🤍🤍🤍
actually gasped when i saw u unfollowed timothee. this is BIG
