#44: i'm on the edge of my seat, and so is the rest of the nation
will we be getting a Kamalanomenon?!?!
hi hi hi sisters ♡ how did the full moon impact you all yesterday? it was truly one of the weirdest days I have had in a long time. started off with me throwing up in the streets of alexandria (so sorry alexandria), biden dropped out, miranda spilled canes sauce on her shirt, my dad told me he’s getting married, our train was delayed and on the train an employee was incredibly rude and a totally not there adult was traumatizing a child, miranda lost her bag on the amtrak, and all of this happened between noon and 9 pm…
WHAT A DAY!!! so I hope that you guys maybe had a better full moon yesterday?!
for the next little bit I want to keep the recommendations section to recommendations for different substacks that I read. I find it to be really important to support small “businesses” (that sounds odd to use here, but maybe influencers is another word I can use?) and one way I can do that is by sharing about them!
this week I want to share the substack
written by and . they are friends that live in Massachusetts and they write for friends. they write about navigating the transformation from “twenty-something” to “Adult with a capital A.” I have loved reading their substack, each monday they send out links that they would send their friends, and on thursdays they share a personal essay or interview or how-to piece. go check them out!movies: this week I watched in the mood for love directed by Wong Kar-wai. he’s a pretty famous hong-kong director who’s stories focus on a non-linear narrative. it was a BEAUTIFUL film. the soundtrack/score was so dynamic and interesting and the cinematography was vibrant. its a melancholy movie for sure, but it was so good! I saw it at a local theater downtown at a theater called IFC. it was my first time going to an independent theater in new york, it was so fun to go to somewhere outside of AMC (but AMC will still have my loyalty because you can’t beat the A-List price)
podcasts: a LOT is changing very quickly in the world of views right now, I highly recommend listening to the What a Day Podcast, I have talked about it before. but over the weekend they released an episode talking about how the attempted assassination of trump might or might not impact the election, it was very clarifying.
music: got to see noah kahan at MSG, it was SUCH a special experience, especially because they showed this tweet before the concert started
SPOILER ALERT: he sold out not just one night at MSG but TWO nights!!! so that was special
also within 24 hours bjørn and my friend brandon both asked me if I had listened to clairo’s new album yet, I had not at that moment but was going to, so I decided to do it right then an there. and a lovely album it was indeed.
in my stomach: I ended my 6 weeks of being on a meal plan this weekend while being in DC, i’ll probably talk about it more in a bit, but I decided to treat myself to a funnel cake while at the baseball game. it was DELICIOUS and I could only eat part of it, where I feel like before I would have tried to eat the whole thing. buttttt I do feel like because I was eating some pretty processed foods, that did cause me to throw up the next day. sooo I guess being on the meal plan was incredibly helpful when it came to treating my body better
first and foremost I want to say, that while yes this is a fun newsletter where I chat about pop culture and movies and clothes and tiktoks and everything that you would probably chat about at a sleepover, I also feel SO strongly about the importance of being politically engaged (which you know from all of my chats about being Pro-Palestine) ESPECIALLY when it comes to being engaged with the politics of our own country, and using the privilege you have to vote. so lets get into it shall we.
WOWIE what a sunday it was for the united states. I myself was in DC this past weekend and on my way down I couldn’t help but think “will Biden step down while i’m in DC?!” and that is EXACTLY what happened. now what the hell does that mean and what will happen next??
well lucky for you I have done some research. starting off please watch this video by jack schlossberg, he is an american journalist, currently just started working for vogue as their political correspondent, and most importantly the grandson of JFK.
biden stepping down is a historic move, not only is he the current seated president, but the election is also only 4 months away with the DNC happening next month. a current president removing themselves from a campaign has not happened since 1968.
with the DNC coming up so soon, that means that there needs to be a democratic nominee by then, but the rules for picking a nominee will be finalized next week. AND several key swing states have to have the official nominees on the ballots before or during the DNC, so if there is not an official nominee, or say the nominee changes again after these ballots are finalized, that means that the official nominee will not be on the ballot for states, which would SUCK. why is there not a federal nation wide ballot for federal offices? I have NO clue, but whatever. so all the people that want to run for the democratic spot need to put out their names NOW, gather delegates’ signatures to be considered and win a majority vote (with 1,986 delegate votes to become the party’s nominee).
biden had roughly 3,800 delegates pledged to him and those don’t automatically go to Harris just because he endorsed her. so the delegates that have already made that Biden pledge will need to re-pledge to another nominee. that being said the president himself, and other top political leaders, have already officially endorsed Kamala Harris for the seat. Kamala also has access to all the funds that have been used for the Biden/Harris campaign. if she was not the official democratic nominee, the Biden/Harris campaign would have to return those funds to the donors, who could then send that money to the official nominee, but that would be a hell of a lot of work and we are on a tight schedule people !!!
if a nominee is not chosen in time, we would be entered into a brokered convention which is when in US politics during a presidential election, when a political party fails to choose a nominee on the first round of delegate voting at the party's nominating convention, ie. the DNC. once the first ballot, or vote, has occurred, if no candidate has a majority of the delegates' votes, the convention is then considered brokered. the nomination is then decided through a process of alternating political horse trading, delegate vote trading and additional revotes. so like the democratic party has to get their shit together FAST!!
okay but thats truly about all I know because we don’t know who the nominees are going to be and then once that happens we will be able to know who the official democratic nominee will be!
idk about you guys but i’m EXCITED for this election. don’t get me wrong, i’m still stressed out as HELL, but I am choosing to remain absolutely hopeful, because thats all we can do. we can’t give up hope now for a better future for our country, and probably the most powerful country in the world *gulp*
so i’m going to deep dive and hopefully find ways to become politically involved this election season, ESPECIALLY if Ms. Kamala is the nominee, because that would be cool as hell to be involved in her campaign. could you imagine, the FIRST WOMAN PRESIDENT, it literally brings tears to my eyes.
tiktok: this is literally me; I love the idea of making instagram a little digital scrapbook;
pinterest: cutie little bookworm; this shirt made me giggle
instagram: this campaign was SO unique!!!; god bless noah kahan
buckle up girlies for the next couple of months, political talk is far from over, but don’t worry i’ll throw in LOTS of fun stuff to keep us afloat.
Aw, so glad you’re enjoying the newsletter - thanks for sharing! 💛
full moon hysterics !
