hi hi hi sisters ♡ wowie has the day slipped away from me, apologies for such a late RECAP. I’ve been feeling under the weather and also did a quick 24 hour trip to utah to support a friend during her dad’s funeral, so life has felt a little ajar today
that being said, I hope you all had a great week (it has felt like the longest week in the world to me honestly) ! january is almost over though, thank goodness !!!
recommendations for different substack articles that I read. I find it to be really important to support small “businesses” (that sounds odd to use here, but maybe influencers is another word I can use?) and one way I can do that is by sharing about them!
loved loved loved loved LOVED this post by
and from , its all about helping friends through grief. this quote in particular really stood out to meOur friend Diana, who lost her brother when she was younger, shared “walk to a wedding, run to a funeral” with us as a reminder to get to your friend’s side quickly, whether you’re calling or seeing them in person.
as we get older we need to become better at helping our loved ones through grief, as death is inevitable. as easy as it is to run to joyful experiences and to cheer someone on during a successful time, its more important to reach out during times of hardship. I know that my sister and I remember more of who reached out to us when our grandma jo passed away in september than who reached out when we got into our respective grad programs. we want to be celebrated in life, but I think more so we want to feel like we can grieve and experience all emotions with our loved ones even more
movies: during my short stint in utah I did manage to squeeze in one movie with friends. we watched maria, its a biopic starring angelina jolie as maria callas, a world famous opera singer. the movie is her reflecting on her life as it nears its end. it was stunning. angelina jolie was phenomenal, like damn. the cinematography was gorgeous- I hope it wins that category.
podcasts: i’m feeling hella stressed about trump again in office, this podcast episode made me feel a wee bit better
in my mind: I finished the overstory. its a beautiful book following the “9 Americans whose unique life experiences with trees bring them together to address the destruction of forests” (ty wikipedia that was worded beautifully) the book is gorgeous and impactful and wow, I am not sure i’ve ever read anything like it before. richard powers’ prose throughout the novel is some of the most beautiful writing i’ve ever read. highly recommend this to everyone. you can also tell he researched like hell for this book because I learned so much about trees despite it being a fictional book
a melting pot of thoughts are swirling through my brain right now. lets start with the heavy topic.
now that trump is back in office, it seems like the america we know and somewhat love is not going to be the same place after these next 4 years. and i’m scared. i’m angry about ICE deporting lovely humans. i’m scared for them. i’m sad for them. and i’m frustrated as hell. and I feel absolutely helpless. people all over the internet are comparing this time in america to the 1930’s in germany when hitler was in charge. and I know we can learn from history, we must actually, so how are we going to stop this man from becoming the next hitler and how are we going to prevent our country from entering into a fascist regime?!?! literally any thoughts or advice on how to de-escalate extreme feelings would be lovely. I oscillate between overconsumption of media and news and spiraling with clocking out of reality and disassociating. but there must be a balance right?! would love love love any advice ◡̈
okay lets talk about something happier shall we? oscar nominations came out this week and literally a shock to everyone, emilia perez got 13 nominations (literally how?!?!) sing sing, however, must to my chagrin, did not get nominated for best picture, but did get three nominations in other categories. i’m hoping it wins at least one !! i’m on a mission to watch all best picture nominees, i’ve already seen 6 out of the 10, so I just need to see 4 more (the substance, emilia perez, nickel boys, and i’m still here). once I see those i’ll have seen most movies in the major categories and I can share my thoughts on what I think might win which category. so that should be fun!
pinterest: yes yes yes little bat; BIGGEST MOOD RIGHT NOW; same same same ayo
instagram: his style is so good; gorgeous gorgeous tattoo; NEED these stamps
okay lets hope that this last week of january goes by quick !! i’m DONE !! and ready for february (I loveeeee valentines day hehe)
