hi hi hi sisters ♡ while I dont care that much about how many subscribers I have, as I really just love writing and sharing and would do it even if only 10 people were subscribed, I still pay attention to the numbers and stats of each RECAP I send out
that being said, its so interesting to see when someone unsubscribes from my newsletter. and it usually correlates with a piece that I wrote that ended up being quite political; surprise surprise, NOT. but I really dont take it personally, consume the media you want!!
keeping the recommendations section to recommendations for different substacks or articles that I read. I find it to be really important to support small “businesses” (that sounds odd to use here, but maybe influencers is another word I can use?) and one way I can do that is by sharing about them!
from is a really personal essay on the never ending desire to be thin, something that is really personal to me as well. i’m trying really hard to shift my mind from having a desire for thinness to a desire for a strong body. a body that can walk up 5 flights of stairs without feeling like my heart is going to pound out of my chest. a body who’s knees dont feel like they are going to break. a body that isnt sore from a measly exercise the next day. but damn oh damn it is much harder than you’d think !!!movies: bjørn and I watched manchester by the sea; I had never seen it before and damn its a really sad movie. but also beautiful in a really melancholy way. casey affleck did a wonderful job. some friends and I went and saw nickel boys on saturday. it just came out recently and is nominated for best picture for the oscars. the movie is filmed in first person perspective, as in the camera is positioned in the point of view of the eyes of the two main characters. truly such a unique way to tell a story, and so so so effective. its a fictional story about a reform school in florida during the jim crow south. reform schools are so horrifying. last february I shared a podcast called unreformed, that goes through and shares experiences from the Alabama Industrial School for Negro Children. and while the story of nickel boys is fictional, it was really powerful to see a part of the history of the US in a movie. I highly recommend the movie, and also the podcast
podcasts: so I dont know anything about the bachelor and people on that franchise, I’ve never watched a full season in my life, HOWEVER, I have been very aware of matt james’ and rachael kirkconnell’s relationship, as they have shown up on my tiktok feed for the past 4 years. so I was one among many that were SHOCKED when matt james posted this breakup post on his instagram. so I was SAT when rachael went on the call her daddy podcast. boy oh boy, I feel so bad for her, she really was so blindsided.
music: alyssa and I went to see sunset blvd this week, i want to write more about it in a couple of weeks, BUT I feel like whenever I go to a broadway show, it kickstarts a broadway musical movement in my music listening patterns haha. the broadway musical adaptation of anastasia is on repeat currently, and I LOVE
in my mind (kinda): alyssa and I have been watching severance (ofc), but we have also been watching season 2 of shrinking. we are quite behind, BUT absolutely loving it. the character development has been so good this season and I care about everyone so much. such a good show and I highly recommend if you havent gotten around to season 2 yet, or if you havent started it at all either !!
its so interesting to see the reactions of the general public when it comes to awards for celebrities. do not get me wrong, I love a good awards show. I love watching the best picture nominees for the oscars, I think its so interesting and I love being able to be part of the pop culture talk. HOWEVER, I think its so silly seeing people online getting up in arms about certain people not winning an award. I understand frustration and expressing that frustration or confusion with friends, but making tiktoks and instagram posts and commenting mean things to the winners baffles me !!!
I feel this way about fandoms in general when it comes to celebrities. like selena gomez fans have notoriously been extreme in their trash talking online ever since justin got with hailey. do not get me wrong, I am biased towards quite a few individuals because of my current or past loyalties to celebrities. I still have a hard time thinking positively about john mayer or jake gyllenhaal or even maybe joe alwyn now. because of my past love for taylor swift, it has been very easy for me to say “f*!k these guys” when I know literally NOTHING about them except they hurt taylor swift in some way shape or form. which like, yeah fuck those guys for hurting a girl. but why do I feel like I too need to have a personal vendetta against these men?! I don’t, but its hard to change a narrative you’ve been taught for so long.
anyways, I do think the grammys are fun. I don’t think they are the end all be all for what is good or listen worthy in music. I dont think that just because someone didnt win a grammy doesnt mean the winner didnt deserve it. I loved chappell roan’s acceptance speech and same with doechii’s! I loved sabrina carpenter’s performance. I loved knowing that sabrina carpenter and olivia rodrigo hugged and that taylor swift let cynthia erivo sit on her chair with her. I was SHOCKED to see what bianca censori wore (or i guess her lack of wearing there of) on the red carpet. the grammys are fun !! its fun to see celebrities all together. it does low key make me think of the capitol from the hunger games though…
that being said, my top albums and some of the songs that mean the most to me were never nominated for a grammy, but that doesnt mean that i’m going to riot against those that won.
fun website: okay this is SUCH a fun little tool, you type In a name and it creates a really cool graphic showing the trend of the name over time, I went through all my friends and it was so cool to see how names have changed with popularity over time
