soooo that will be saved for another day, or maybe never, but for this week, we are going to go on a deep dive into each oscar category and i’m going to share my thoughts on what I think will happen this upcoming sunday !!

keeping the recommendations section to recommendations for different substacks that I read. I find it to be really important to support small “businesses” (that sounds odd to use here, but maybe influencers is another word I can use?) and one way I can do that is by sharing about them!

Lunch on Friday

that we all have time to read, we just have to learn to prioritize it better !!! I know I fall into the habit of saying “I dont have time to read” when in reality I do. I can easily look at my screen time and see that yesterday I spent 35 minutes on instagram and 27 minutes on tiktok, thats about an hour of my day I could have spent reading instead. I have some new books downloaded onto my kindle and i’m excited to get into them. I think having a kindle really helps me read more because its so small and be with me everywhere with ease !!

movies: the movie gods blessed me this week because challengers was back in theaters and I got to see it again. THIS MOVIE IS AMAZING. truly so good. sad it was snubbed for oscar nominations… bjørn and I have started watching the mission impossible movies because i’ve never seen them before. so we watched mission impossible I and II this weekend. they are so silly and funny and i’m very much enjoying myself. tom cruise is quite charming and I really like him haha. for movie church we watched blackkklansman and holy. none of us had seen it before so we were all very engaged and intrigued. truly a great movie and it was done so well. scary how relevant it is today still. highly recommend.

podcasts: sing sing isnt streaming yet for people to watch BUT you can listen to this podcast episode with the filmmaker and one of the actors, perfect for oscars prep

music: I am really enjoying selena gomez’s new single call me when you break up, its so fun and I am looking forward to her album coming out

in my mind: uggs came out with some mary janes, and honestly I think they are quite fun

also you guyssssss, having two tv shows with new episodes each week is SO fun !!! between severance and white lotus I am living my best life !! also it means more opportunities to see cutie friends because our apartment is the gathering apartment, which makes my heart BURST

okay lets get started shall we? tbh i am only really discussing full length feature nominations, besides documentaries because I did not get around to everything this year.

I guess we shall start with the best picture nominees because I have seen them all and these movies honestly dominate every other category as well; which can be quite frustrating because where were so many other wonderful movies that came out in 2024 that didn’t get any nominations and imo deserved them. its interesting to see how things are spread out in each category and how these 10 films are in every one. so I will give my thoughts on these 10 movies and my opinions on their other nominations and then I will go through the other movies nominated in their respective categories

BEST PICTURE

Anora- also nominated for best director, actress, supporting actor, editing, and original screenplay. this would be SO fun to win best actress because mikey madison was amazing, but I dont think that would happen. I could either see anora leaving with zero awards OR with like winning best picture, we shall see.
The Brutalist- also nominated for best director, actor, supporting actress, supporting actor, original screenplay, cinematography, editing, score, and production design. adrian brody has been sweeping everyone with best actor so I wont be surprised if he wins that. I also would loveeee to see the brutalist take home best score, it was incredible. the cinematography was also gorgeous. I honestly wouldnt be surprised if this received best picture as well though.
A Complete Unknown- also nominated for best director, actor, supporting actress, supporting actor, adapted screenplay, costume design, and sound. as much as I would LOVE for timmy to win best actor and become the YOUNGEST actor to win the award, I don’t think its going to happen. BUT he did just win the SAG award for best actor soooo you never know… he has been campaigning his ass off for this film, whos to say. I do think this film will leave with at least one oscar, and I have no clue what it will be… maybe costume design or sound idk
Conclave- also nominated for best actor, supporting actress, adapted screenplay, editing, costume design, production design, and score. I loved this movie but I just dont know how it will do on sunday, maybeeee costume design or production design
Dune Pt 2- also nominated for cinematography, sound, visual effects, and production design. I think this should win for sound or visual effects or production design. this movie was stunning and truly so good at world building, but I feel like everyone forgot about this movie because it came out so long ago compared to a lot of others on this list
Emilia Perez- also nominated for 12 other categories HOWEVER I dont think it will win a single one because if you havent heard, Karla Sofia Gascon, the main character in the film, is kinda a horrible person and her tweets from the past decade or so were revealed and her personality has essentially sabotaged any chance for this film to win. buttttt I do think it might still win at least one of their nominations, maybe best supporting actress for Zoe Saldana
I'm Still Here- also nominated for best actress and international feature. fernanda torres NEEDS to win best actress for this, she was jaw dropping. also I really want it to win international feature too !!
Nickel Boys- also nominated for adapted screenplay. the movie that is nominated for best picture and only one other category, which is kinda shocking because it should have been nominated for editing, iykyk. I would love if this won best picture
The Substance- also nominated for best director, actress, original screenplay, and hair & makeup. I HOPE that this wins original screenplay, best director, or hair & makeup. I think this was such a unique story and movie and incredibly original. I also think that the hair & makeup was phenomenally done. I would love if it won best director because shes the only female director nominated. I wouldnt be surprised if demi moore won best actress
Wicked- also nominated for best actress, supporting actress, editing, costume design, hair & makeup, sound, visual effects, production design, and score. coming out of left field but I feel like wicked might win best picture. i wont be surprised if it doesnt win, but i’m just saying, I could see it happening, its a very metaphorical movie compared to the state of our country rn. I do think they will leave with an oscar or two

THE REST OF THE NOMINATED MOVIES

Sing Sing- best actor, adapted screenplay, and original song; as you all should know by now, this was my favorite movie to come out of 2024 and I think it should be nominated for best picture and win every award it is nominated for. however, in reality i dont know if it will win a single oscar unfortunately, but we shall see !!
The Apprentice- best actor and supporting actor; I haven’t seen this and I dont know if I can while trump is president, BUT I have heard that sebastian stan is phenomenal and I cant wait to eventually see him soar
A Real Pain- best supporting actor and original screenplay; i do think that kieran culkin is going to win for best supporting actor. he was the star of the movie for sure
Nosferatu- best cinematography, costume design, hair & makeup, and production design; I unfortunately didnt get to see this, however, I do think their costumes are STUNNING from what I have seen pictures of. so I think it would be cool if it won that
Flow- international feature and animated feature; I havent seen this yet, maybe I will this week though, BUT I have heard that the animation is so pretty, so i’m excited to engage
Wild Robot- animated feature, sound, and score; I lovedddd this movie but I am not sure if it will win anything, I would be happy if it won animated feature though
September 5- original screenplay… havent seen it or heard much about it…
The Girl with the Needle- international feature nominee; I havent seen it but will at some point !!
The Seed of the Sacred Fig- international feature nominee, same as above !! I have heard more about this one and its all been good things
Inside Out 2- animated feature; I dont think it will win this but like maybe it will, it earned so much money
Memoir of a Snail- animated feature; i’ve heard mixed things but I could see it winning because its different
Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl- animated feature; okay this is also a stop motion film, so it might be between this and memoir of a snail because I think stop motion is very unique
Maria- cinematography; I thought the cinematography of this film was so gorgeous, but I don’t see it winning compared to the others in this category
Gladiator II- costume design; I didnt see it but I dont think it will win
A Different Man- hair & makeup; also havent seen it but I think it has a chance of winning this category, I need to see it though
Alien: Romulus- visual effects; considering that godzilla minus one won last year for visual effects I could see this winning, but also I could see Dune pt. 2 being the winner
Better Man- visual effects; I loved this movie but I dont think it will win any oscars
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes- visual effects; havent seen it but I also dont think it will win (see alien: romulus)
The Journey (Six Triple Eight)- original song; havent seen it
Never Too Late (Elton John)- original song; havent seen it

its honestly kinda crazy that only 30 movies, out of all the movies released in 2024, are the ones nominated for the oscars. I know plenty of other movies that are worthy of your time as well, or even more so. and its just a reminder that the oscars and other awards in general have no real say in what media is the best media of that year. but still so fun to engage in !!
