hi hi hi sisters ♡ i cant believe that it is march and this weekend in new york we got a sneak peek into spring, unfortunately it was quickly snatched away from us, but it was nice while it lasted! i’m hoping that things get warmer for good because I am getting at least a bloody nose a week and this cold air is NOT helping!!
I got to see hells kitchen this week on broadway and HOLY it was phenomenal. like DAMN, everyone had pipes and the dancing was amazing and I loved the set design and I love new york city so much so this was perfect because its a love letter to new york and the youth of new york and yeah, all good things all around
keeping the recommendations section to recommendations for different substacks that I read. I find it to be really important to support small “businesses” (that sounds odd to use here, but maybe influencers is another word I can use?) and one way I can do that is by sharing about them!
i’ve seen quite a few of these movies that
shares in films that have healed me; but I am adding the rest of them to my to watch list !!!movies: alyssa and I got to see moonlight in theaters as it was released on IMAX again. it was so beautiful and moving and heartbreaking and I loved it. for our book to movie club we read and then watched the last song, man I have not seen that movie in like over a decade. it was sooo cheesy but also so nostalgic. makes me want to rewatch more nicholas sparks’ movies. and then continuing on with mission impossible movies, bjørn and I watched mission impossible III. it was silly and good. i’m excited to keep watching them.
podcasts: still obsessing about severance and the severance podcast with adam scott and ben stiller is fueling me after each episode. I AM STILL NOT OVER THIS PAST WEEK’S EPISODE OMG
music: a new single came to my attention, its called we hug now by sydney rose. its giving lizzy and gracie and phoebe vibes, which are perfect
in my mind: if you havent heard, the administration of the february CA bar exam was a SHIT show, you can read more about it here, makes me quite stressed for july (even more than I was, which I didnt think was possible)
in my stomach: I made the yummiest chicken pesto meatballs this weekend! the recipe is here (gift link for NYT cooking). I didn’t have panko breadcrumbs so I used italian breadcrumbs instead and it worked just fine. I had made some homemade pesto because I had lots of basil that needed to get used, so it was nice to have a recipe to use it for. will be making again and again. so easy and delicious!
all things oscars. lets start from the beginning. ariana and cynthia ♡ WOW, this was EXACTLY what I was hoping for. their performance brought me to tears. they were so phenomenal and I just want them to sing together forever and ever.
I really liked the pacing and order of things. I liked that they had a random order for a lot of the awards, it made the “smaller” awards seem more important. I also really liked that they had cast members from the films present and talk about some of the categories and their experiences of working with these people, like the hair and makeup team or the costume designers. AND the costume designer for wicked is the first black man in academy history to win for best costumes !!! I also liked conan o’brien as the host. I felt like he did a good job at making timely jokes while also saying his love and respect for film as a whole.
okay, i’ll say it, I really thought that timothee chalamet had a shot at winning best actor. I KNOW that he will win an oscar in his future, like that is written in the stars for him, I just know it. HOWEVER, I was quite sad and disappointed that he didnt win last night. I was really rooting for him. he dedicated so much time to learn to play the guitar and sing and embody bob dylan, and he campaigned the hell out of himself for this opportunity, but alas it was not enough. adrien brody really is so deserving of this role, but his acceptance speech low key pissed me off. he took way too long, threw his gum to his partner, and even said “please turn the music off. I've done this before.” which just seems SO pompous and arrogant. so that annoyed the crap out of me and just adds to me being a little sad about timmy not making history as youngest actor to win best actor. but his time will come !!
there were some other awkward moments when it came to acceptance speeches. mainly the people who wrote the song “el mal” for emilia perez starting singing on stageeeeee. it was so uncomfy!! also sad that they did kick off people from the stage after like 20 seconds when others were given much more time for their speeches…
its soooo interesting to see how many people are pissed off online and saying that cynthia and ariana were exploited for their voices and how the academy should be ashamed of themselves for letting them sing for the oscars and not give them a single award *eye roll* the people who are mad that wicked didnt win “bigger” awards are the same people that are mad that beyonce won best album and think that taylor swift should win every award. they are also the same people that think barbie should have won best picture. i’m not saying that these opinions are wrong, but I am saying that these people are not well versed in how the oscars work. because not a single person I knew was expecting cynthia or ariana to win any award and no one was expecting wicked to win best picture.
so so so so so happy that no other land won best documentary!!! I cannot wait to watch it and I hope that because it won it will be easy to access soon in the states!
the most annoying part of the whole night though is that fucking hulu kicked us off RIGHT BEFORE they announced the winner for best actress. i’m not joking. so we had to scramble to find a tiktok live stream to watch best actress and best picture because no where had it for us unless we had a cable service…
I broke my 2 year streak (i’ve only watched the oscars for the past 3 years lol) of correctly guessing best director, actor, actress, and picture all accurately. I didn’t get ANY of those right this year. which is kinda surprising. but I got a lot of other categories right, and I feel good about that. the more I consume about the academy and how so many people dont watch the films when they have access to them all or how they even abstain from voting for some categories really pisses me off. I managed to watch 32% of all of the nominees (50 total, thats including all the shorts and documentaries too). which yeah 1/3 is not a TON, but if you take out the shorts and documentaries, I watched 50% of the movies. I would have watched more but I have limited funds and time, especially compared to academy members that have access for free and this is their job… so thats just annoying to think about. I dont know if things will ever change, but I hope they do at some point, because these people need to be held accountable for the task of voting for the oscars.
