#82: respect mother earth- even though her allergies are killing me rn
oopsies, we are a day late !!!
hi hi hi sisters ♡ so sorry that this week’s newsletter is a day late, no excuses, yesterday just slipped away from me! but thank you for still being here and for your love and support
this week’s substack is gonna be FULL of wonderful links and articles and everything in between to inspire you to treat our planet better - for she gives us life itself !!
substack article of the week:
of writes about why she is grocery shopping lesseven though she wrote this a couple of months ago, I think its perfect for this week as food waste is a massive problem, and something I try really hard to avoid but could always be better at
movies: watched cloudy with a chance of meatballs with some friends last week, I LOVED this little book growing up, so the movie is quite nostalgic for me, and honestly very funny and the animation is quite good. ALSO was able to watch pride and prejudice in theaters for the 20th anniversary, and WOW that movie is so beautiful and I loved being able to see it in theaters
podcasts: okay maybe a hot take, but I finally got around to listening to the chappell roan interview with the call her daddy podcast, and I didnt think it was as awful as a lot of people were claiming it to be. I do think she sometimes puts her foot in her mouth, but I also think that a lot of people do…? idk, I think she did built herself on a platform of activism and is starting to realize the pressure that that brings on the day-to-day, and don’t get me wrong, I am all for calling out celebrities when they begin to back out of being activists, I just didnt think this interview looked that bad.
LOVED this episode of the girlscamp podcast all about sustainable fashion and slower living to better connect with the earth. even though this is usually an ex-mormon focused podcast, this episode is truly for everyone, especially those that want to be better at their clothing intake and thrifting (ME) its going to take time to find what you love, but I think it might be worth it
in my mind: this article shares ways to opt out of consumerism, while this article is about living sustainably even when you love stuff (guilty)
it is no surprise to me that earth day is celebrated during spring; for spring is truly the time where it feels like life is beginning again.
it is a beautiful reminder that even through hard times (like winter), life can reemerge and return stronger and more beautiful than it felt like it was before. and while I do think there is beauty in every season (YES EVEN WINTER, I love winter) I think spring is maybe the most magical and special of them all
that being said, our planet is dying, and that breaks my heart. I want to do better at buying secondhand and taking advantage of everything that already exists on this earth. we truly don’t need as many new products as companies think we do! if you walk into any thrift or antique store, your jaw will drop at just how much is readily available for us to buy. I am not perfect at thrifting or buying secondhand, part of that reason is I have a really hard time finding pieces in my size (which SUCKS) and another one is that I do enjoy buying new, BUT I want to be better! I do loveeee buying home stuff at antique and thrift stores, so that is a start. AND I have a goal this year for all gifts that I give to others to either be handmade, purchase it used, or if i can’t do either of those, i will instead buy it from a small business
with all that being said, here is a big round up of links and companies that you can look at if you want to start making changes to how you consume. if none of these strike your fancy you can also check to see which organizations are B-corp certified (which means a company has demonstrated a commitment to balancing purpose and profit, meeting high standards of social and environmental performance, and being transparent and accountable to all stakeholders)
clothing and fashion: parade is a great company to purchase your underwear from, they focus on making their pieces from reclaimed, recycled, responsible, renewable, or regenerative materials. they are super size inclusive and their underwear is COMFY.
thredup is currently offering free clean out bags that can be delivered to your home for you to fill up with unwanted clothes and sell them on thredup. even if you dont care about the money you can get, its still a great and easy way to donate clothes you are done using
if you want to be better at buying second hand, I recommend the chrome extension beni (thanks rachel!!) when you are online shopping, the extension will pop up with pieces that are the exact same to what you are searching for but on a secondhand website (thredup, poshmark, etc). and if it cant find the exact piece it will find similar ones. you can filter for your size as well! it does use AI to help- not every system is perfect
if you live in NYC (or phoenix, chicago, charlotte, philly, or dallas) I highly recommend the new thrift store called reclectic. the motherbrand of nuuly, also a great resource if you want to do better at not buying new- getting new pieces can be so fun and this is a great way to do so sustainably; anyways, reclectic is a store that sells items from Retail & Direct channels of anthro, free people, etc, and can be new with tags, customer returns or pre-loved items from their rental business, nuuly
books: one easy way to be better about not buying books is by using your local library !!! if you are a kindle user you can use the app libby to get digital books that you can read on your kindle. you can also rent movies and videogames and SO MUCH MORE (especially with an NYC library card).
if you prefer to have your own copy of a book you can easily find just about any book you want on thriftbooks or from a local used bookstore
I also am a big big BIG fan of the little free libraries that are in most cities
home products: some other simple swaps in your home can include reusable silicone ziploc bags (trader joes has some AMAZING ones that are very comparable to stash bags).
in new york we get charged 5 cents for every bag we need to use, so i always make sure i have a baggu bag on me at all times, they fold up nicely, come in cute patterns, AND are made with recyclable materials.
for cleaning supplies in our house we use the brand blueland. they are dissolvable tablets for cleaning solutions, dishwasher pods, and hand soap. love and they are easy to use, don’t take up space for refills, and you use them in glass containers and you dont have to purchase new bottles of supplies whenever you run out.
alyssa got us on the brand who gives a crap. they use bamboo or recycled paper to create paper towels, toilet paper, and tissues. they also donate 50% of their profits to organizations that help give access to clean water and toilet paper to those in need. if you want to use less paper towels in your life, i highly recommend swedish dish cloths. they are essentially super durable reusable little cloths that work like paper towels but you can wash and reuse them over and over again. and they come in cute patterns!
for other housing needs (dish scrubbers, wool dryer balls, toothpaste tablets, metal straws, produce bags, soap refills, and more) you can look at websites like zero waste outlet or common good
media to consume: some movies perfect for this week include wall-e, princess mononoke, my neighbor totoro, nausicaa of the valley of the wind, avatar, the lorax, any david attenborough nature documentary (especially the year earth changed), ferngully: the last rainforest, don’t look up, march of the penguins, interstellar, the day after tomorrow, the boy who harnessed the wind, pocahontas, over the hedge, spirit, twister(s), the wild robot, flow, brother bear, moana, and arrival
also this clip from fantasia 2000, the firebird suite, which actually means the world to me
okay I hope these inspire you to try to make simple changes to live a more sustainable life and to help our beautiful planet earth!
pinterest: my queen; this made me so nostalgic; star and moon besties
instagram: cutie little earth day bucket list; she is mother; this ad- DAMN
happy earth day my lovelies!! I hope you enjoy some time outside this week and while the weather is nice. go stop and smell the flowers. soak up the sun. and enjoy this beautiful planet we get to live on!!
