hi hi hi sisters ♡
welcome back to a new week! LOTS of new subscribers because i went door to door via instagram dm’s to recruit people; so welcome, i’m SO happy to have you here. my first post explains why i started this newsletter, but tldr: I LOVE sharing about life and what im learning and consuming and I wanted a place to put all of that while creating a community for girls (and a couple of you fellas) to come together and feel less alone about not feeling like you have it all together- because I sure as hell do not haha
and if you so desire, you can look at all of my old newsletters by clicking here for the archive ◡̈
here are a few of my favorite moments from the oscars:
jonathan glazer, the director, for the zone of interest accepting the best international feature. mstyslav chernov, raney aronson-rath and michelle mizner for 20 days in mariupol for best documentary feature. ramy youssef spoke multiple times about the artists 4 ceasefire pins while being interviewed on the red carpet, these pins were worn by many celebrities that are calling for an immediate ceasefire in gaza.
I really appreciated that these creators are using their platform to call for a change in the world right now
movies: I can’t believe I am saying this but I only watched ONE movie this week. and while it was AMAZING because it was dune: part 2 (I literally have SO. MANY. THOUGHTS. about this film I will comment on this post to post them all because its a ridiculous amount and will possibly give some minor spoilers)
but I am shocked that was the only one I saw… alas school has been busy and im in the midst of midterms with papers and studying and MPRE prep, so my movie time is dwindling. and this week for movie church we watched the oscars.
podcasts: taylor lautner and his wife, taylor (tay) lautner, have a podcast called the squeeze, its honestly really nice and i think they are creating a good platform to address mental health and struggles that people go through and not just because they have a platform already. but in the past couple of weeks they had a girl named maddy come onto the podcast and share her story dealing with stage 4 terminal cancer. she went viral on tiktok for a video she posted sharing her cancer bucket list, one of the items included being on a podcast. which is how this episode came to be. highly recommend ◡̈ also the comment section on her tiktok makes me EMO, I love how much people rally together when someone has cancer, or another terminal illness, and the lengths people will go to to help those people. I wish that chutzpah was put to use with other world issues, but I have to appreciate the kindness and generosity when I see it
music: the bleachers came out with a new album this week, on international womens day, how rude of them honestly…. but im not gonna lie, I really like it. the bleachers were one of the last concerts I went to before lockdown happened, and it was a great show. I feel like for a long time none of my close friends knew who they were, and I am happy that they are getting more attention, albeit because jack is a king producer and everyone knows him because of taylor swift, I think their music is lovely. they kinda remind me of LANY sometimes
ALSO billie’s performance of what was I made for AND ryan gosling’s performance of i’m just ken, both were outstanding
in my stomach: a peanut butter cookies and cream cake by courtney cake, now say that five times fast. i really love her chocolate based cakes, I think they are SO delicious, and her frosting is also very yummy
I would love to get better at piping on cakes, I find making cakes to be so fun, but sometimes the piping isnt the best, but i’m learning. I think I need to get some different (or more) tips to get the shell border effect that people do on cakes, and also just practice more
oh how I love being a women- but its also so frustrating and hard and we can’t even make choices for our own bodies, like what the hell
this month, as we know, is women’s history month with last friday being international women’s day. I love having a time to reflect on all the wonderful women in my life, and the beauty that there is of being a girl in this world. but that doesn’t mean that it comes easy. as I was scrolling through tiktok I came across this video that is expressing MAJOR frustration (and its alllll 100% warranted) with how men who are getting a male IUD are allowed to have comprehensive pain management for procedure and recovery when women who get IUDs are NEVER given that option. there are a lot of frustrations to have about being a women in the world today, but the difference in medical care is one of the most frustrating (in my opinion)
gosh I don’t even know what else to say besides i hope that things change for us girls. I hope that we elect people in office that care about our decisions and choices and how their policies impact our actions, or lack thereof
tiktok: follow up tiktok to the cancer bucketlist, this made me cry happy tears; marcus mumford cover of end of beginning (also I had ZERO clue he was married to carey mulligan until last night); changes happening in women’s hockey
pinterest: I need this; me on a rare occasion; banana boots
instagram: who needs a hamburger phone, I want a croissant phone; I still can’t believe that this is hand-knit; gorgeous gorgeous boy; I LOVE her campaigns always
thanks for reading and being part of this community and I hope it can keep growing! this next weekend i’m going to utah for one of my best friend’s wedding and while im in town im getting my hair done by my hair QUEEN kenzie, and im going to my natural color, since the 6th grade I have added highlights or ombre or balyage to my hair and i havent had my hair be just my natural color without some sort of artificial blonde since then. im kinda nervous but also pretty excited. its something ive been wanting to do for a long time now, I even attempted to do it in september but the darker tone faded pretty quick, so we are doing a more permanent solution this time around and I know that I can add blonde to it later if I hate it.
anyways, hope you all have a great week!! lots of love ♡
xoxo,
your big sis, kaitlynn
first leaving the movie dune I really only could think about a couple of things. one being the major parallel between what we were seeing on the big screen compared to what we are witnessing to the people of palestine. especially seeing the children hurt in the film. really made me cry. actually the only things of the film that made me cry were because of things that reminded me of the real world. the second thing that I thought about was how big and precedential this movie felt. like dune the book set up sci fi as we know it. like lord of the rings did to fantasy. and this movie felt monumental to the process of that.
- the religious deconstruction thoughts and parallels. the once beautiful sentiment of believing so deeply but now being on the flip side almost. (omg the scenes where everyone was worshipping him was WILD. the crowds were gigantic. reminded me of mecca) and him being literally a white savior, but not because hes going to bring everyone to their downfall
- would have LOVED to see everyone get on the worms. like how did a fleet of people get on
- LOVED stilgar and his reaffirmations and reactions EVERYTIME timmy did something that was like for the prophecy. looking for signs everywhere. but I really liked him as a character so so so much
- zendaya was phenomenal with her facial acting. when he was riding the worm and you know she was stressed out of her mind that her boyfriend was either going to die or embarrass the hell out of her. also loved watching their love unfold and like when she is teaching home how to sand walk and he’s like “in these books blah blah blah” and she just gives him that look like “white boy you better not tell me how to do this” and he immediately retreats is sooo cute and funny
- when timmy picked his freemen name. loved that. so symbolic
- the mother, ooooh lady jessica, she played evil and cunning so well. had all those people twisted around her little finger
- would have loved an actual sex scene (not needed for the film I recognize that but for my own personal viewing pleasure, I was seeing it on the largest screen in america)
- austin butler. holy shit. he played psychotic so well. loved him. oozed crazy. every time he would slice someone’s throat (after he did it the first time- that was just horrifying and his cannibal concubine, OMG haunting) I couldn’t help but let out a laugh of shock. the second kiss back to the uncle was UNSCRIPTED
- lots of parallels to the first film, shot by shot wise. the burning of the bodies. the attacking of the northern city in arrakis, the fight scene between austin and timmy compared to timmys fight scene with his trainer in the 1st one
- OMG the aspect of like preserving water of past ones but then as soon as their temple gets destroyed they waste all of the water of the fremens. ALSO how its so important for the fremen to preserve water but the harkonnens just throwing up willingly makes you realize how indigenous people have to adapt when colonizers dont
- the space suits that let them float and fly were soooo cool
- lastly timmy. wow. literally every 3 min I couldn’t help but think “he’s so cute” “I love him” “he’s beautiful”
oh my god the mac n cheese fanny 🧀
