first leaving the movie dune I really only could think about a couple of things. one being the major parallel between what we were seeing on the big screen compared to what we are witnessing to the people of palestine. especially seeing the children hurt in the film. really made me cry. actually the only things of the film that made me cry were because of things that reminded me of the real world. the second thing that I thought about was how big and precedential this movie felt. like dune the book set up sci fi as we know it. like lord of the rings did to fantasy. and this movie felt monumental to the process of that.
- the religious deconstruction thoughts and parallels. the once beautiful sentiment of believing so deeply but now being on the flip side almost. (omg the scenes where everyone was worshipping him was WILD. the crowds were gigantic. reminded me of mecca) and him being literally a white savior, but not because hes going to bring everyone to their downfall
- would have LOVED to see everyone get on the worms. like how did a fleet of people get on
- LOVED stilgar and his reaffirmations and reactions EVERYTIME timmy did something that was like for the prophecy. looking for signs everywhere. but I really liked him as a character so so so much
- zendaya was phenomenal with her facial acting. when he was riding the worm and you know she was stressed out of her mind that her boyfriend was either going to die or embarrass the hell out of her. also loved watching their love unfold and like when she is teaching home how to sand walk and he’s like “in these books blah blah blah” and she just gives him that look like “white boy you better not tell me how to do this” and he immediately retreats is sooo cute and funny
- when timmy picked his freemen name. loved that. so symbolic
- the mother, ooooh lady jessica, she played evil and cunning so well. had all those people twisted around her little finger
- would have loved an actual sex scene (not needed for the film I recognize that but for my own personal viewing pleasure, I was seeing it on the largest screen in america)
- austin butler. holy shit. he played psychotic so well. loved him. oozed crazy. every time he would slice someone’s throat (after he did it the first time- that was just horrifying and his cannibal concubine, OMG haunting) I couldn’t help but let out a laugh of shock. the second kiss back to the uncle was UNSCRIPTED
- lots of parallels to the first film, shot by shot wise. the burning of the bodies. the attacking of the northern city in arrakis, the fight scene between austin and timmy compared to timmys fight scene with his trainer in the 1st one
- OMG the aspect of like preserving water of past ones but then as soon as their temple gets destroyed they waste all of the water of the fremens. ALSO how its so important for the fremen to preserve water but the harkonnens just throwing up willingly makes you realize how indigenous people have to adapt when colonizers dont
- the space suits that let them float and fly were soooo cool
- lastly timmy. wow. literally every 3 min I couldn’t help but think “he’s so cute” “I love him” “he’s beautiful”
